Difference Between Radial and Bias Trailer Tires

When you buy tires for your trailer, it is important to buy ST (special trailer) tires. These are made specifically for trailer applications. For example, a typical trailer tire might be ST/205/75R15. Also, some tires are bias and others are radial, so which is best? Let’s take a look at each.

Radial Tires
A radial tire allows the sidewall and the tread to function as two independent features of the tire.
Radial tires have plies that run perpendicularly across the tire and belts, running below the tread around the tire’s circumference. Radial tires run cooler, have a longer tread life, and are steel belted which results in a stronger overall construction.

Bias Tires
A bias tire consists of multiple rubber plies overlapping each other. The crown and sidewalls are interdependent. The overlapped plies form a thick layer that is less flexible and more sensitive to overheating. The design of this tire provides for a stronger sidewall. Bias tires are usually less expensive.

Always consider your trailer’s handling and what the manufacturer recommends. For trailers with a great deal of use, radials are the best buy, as they get about twice the tread life of bias tires. Bias tires are great for occasional use or if you do not put a lot of miles on the trailer each year.
