What Vehicle Will Tow My New Trailer?

What will towYou have found the trailer that you want! Now you have to determine what vehicle can tow it. Check the weight of the trailer. Don’t forget to also check how much weight the trailer can hold, found in the owners manual or stamped/stickered on the frame of the trailer.

Here are a few things you need to take into consideration to make sure you are purchasing the right vehicle:

  1. Check the owners manual for the vehicle's max tow weight. Be sure to not exceed this weight as it could cause severe damage to your vehicle.
  2.  Know your GCWR- This stands for gross combined weight rating- the weight of your vehicle, trailer, and everything that is in it (including fluids and any customizations to your vehicle or trailer). Be sure to take this figure into consideration.
  3. Know your GAWR- This stands for gross axle weight rating- which is the total allowable weight on any given individual axle.
  4. Trailer weight- make sure you know the weight of your empty trailer but don’t forget to include the weight of what you are hauling. Ensure your vehicle can handle the combined weight of the trailer and what's on it.
  5. Does the vehicle already have a tow hitch? If not, can one be installed? You will also need to verify that the hitch can handle the weight of the trailer and what you are towing.
Having these numbers in hand will make it easier for you to narrow down the right vehicle for you and your towing needs.
